I’m currently deep in an AI course at the University of Maryland, building out new features that merge technology with real-world solutions in the caregiving industry. Last night, while working on one of those features, I hit a wall.
A prompt I created simply wouldn’t cooperate. I adjusted variables, rewrote logic, even restructured part of the flow—but no luck.
So I turned to ChatGPT for help.
It calmly walked me through a few fixes. I reversed a couple of my missteps. And then—like magic—it worked.
I sent a screenshot to my AI assistant, and it replied with just three words:“Great job, Kevin!”
I sat there for a moment and smiled. Because honestly? Sometimes, we all just need an attaboy.
That small interaction got me thinking about the world of caregivers—the real frontline heroes of our time. In a field where caregiver turnover rates exceed 80%, that simple recognition can be the difference between keeping a great team member or losing one.
Too many home care agencies focus all their energy on recruiting new caregivers—when the real win is in retention.
Why Recognition Matters in Caregiver Retention:
Caregivers often report lack of appreciation as a top reason for leaving.
A simple “thank you” is more powerful than a bonus when it’s heartfelt and consistent.
Teams that feel seen and valued perform better—and stay longer.
Just like a complex AI code finally working after hours of troubleshooting deserves a celebration…So does someone showing up every day to help seniors eat, bathe, feel safe, and feel loved.
If you're in home care, ask yourself:
Are you doing enough to say “thank you”?
Do your caregivers feel valued, or just used?
Is your recruitment strategy backed by a real retention plan?
Let’s build something better. Recognition is the retention tool no algorithm can replace.
